Common problems

Common Peugeot 207 problems we fix

These are the issues we see most often on the 207. Whatever the symptom, we diagnose first and explain the fix before any work starts.

Timing chain wear

A rattle on cold start or timing-related fault codes on the 1.4/1.6 VTi and 1.6 THP engines can mean a stretched chain or a tired tensioner. Caught early, it's a planned repair rather than an engine rebuild.

01

Oil consumption

These engines can use oil between services. Running low is hard on the timing chain and turbo, so we check levels and use the correct specification oil.

02

Turbo and carbon build-up (THP)

Loss of power, smoke or rough running on the THP can come from carbon deposits on the intake valves or turbo wear. We diagnose before replacing anything.

03

AL4 automatic gearbox

Jerky shifts or a gearbox warning light on automatic 207s. Often fixable with the right diagnosis, fluid and solenoid work.

04

Water pump and cooling

Coolant leaks around the water pump and thermostat housing are common as the car ages. Left alone, they can lead to overheating.

Ask a question
Why does my Peugeot 207 rattle when I start it?

A short rattle on a cold start is a common sign of timing chain or tensioner wear on the VTi and THP engines. Bring it in for a check before it gets worse.

What oil should my 207 use?

It depends on the engine. The VTi, THP and HDi engines each have their own specification. We use the correct grade at every service and can advise you on top-ups between visits.
